Africa Adventure: Couples Getaway (Activities)

Sheila and Matt took Africa by storm. They were ready for adventure and went cage diving with sharks, bungee jumping over Victoria Falls and on several safari game drives. Take a look below to see what this outgoing couple did on their 2-week trip to Africa.

SOUTH AFRICA

Shark Cage Diving

Head to Gaansabi, about 2 hours outside of Cape Town for your daily adventure. En route to your dive site, a marine biologist will brief you before you get up close and personal. These operators are involved in shark research, identification and tagging of the sharks and will educate you on all aspects of their valuable conservation work before you head out to sea. Once anchored in the channel, a specially designed shark cage which floats above the surface is lowered into the water. Guests may enter the cages inside ring which hovers above the water, descend into the water, and wait for a shark to approach.

Cape of Good Hope Tour

This tour takes in the scenic highlights of the Cape Peninsula, beginning with the four secluded beaches of Clifton, as well as the sidewalk cafés and bars of trendy Camp’s Bay. The next stop is the spectacular coastal suburb of Hout Bay, a former fishing village with a long, sandy beach facing a bay framed by the mountains. Explore the restaurants, shops and markets of Mariner’s Wharf, a harbour-front emporium with a distinct maritime ambiance. If open, the tour will continue along the breath-taking 600m heights of Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most spectacular passes, past the Cape’s longest beach near Noordhoek and the hamlets of Kommetjie and Scarborough.
Continue the drive to the Cape of Good Hope to explore the nature reserve and see the Diaz Cross. From here you will travel to Simon’s Town, famous for its naval military base, and then visit the charming penguin colony at Boulders Beach Reserve in Cape Point Nature Reserve. The tour ends at the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, set against the eastern slopes of spectacular Table Mountain.

Game Drives at Marataba

In the company of your Field Guide, you will learn more about the Big Five and the many unique animal species found on the Marakele National Park. Each game drive lasts approximately 3-4 hours long, and includes a scenic coffee and sundowner break to purely appreciate just being in the moment. Predators are accustomed to the vehicles at Marataba, and do not see them as a threat. This enables Guides to get into very close proximity with Africa’s most impressive animal species. Photographic opportunities are simply spectacular.

Driving the Garden Route

The Garden Route is a 190-mile route that extends along South Africa’s southwestern coast. You can start at either the Port Elizabeth or Cape Town airports.  Knysna is one of the Garden Route’s best known travel destinations, named as one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World and one of the Top 25 in Africa in Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice Destinations Awards. Surrounding Knysna are the towns of Sedgefield, Brenton, Noetzie, Rheenendal and Buffalo Bay. Indigenous forests, , lakes, rivers, mountains and beautiful coastlines combined with a moderate climate, make the Knysna area a natural Eden for flora and fauna lovers.
There are plenty of outdoor adventures such as horse riding, hiking, yachting, fishing and canoeing. For a pure adrenaline rush get into the more extreme sports of abseiling, paragliding, scuba diving or water skiing and some of the best mountain bike routes in the country.

ZAMBIA

Zambezi River Sunset Cruise

You can relax and enjoy the riverine vegetation and spot the excellent birdlife as well as hippo and occasional crocodile. In the drier months, wildlife such as elephant and many antelope species can be seen grazing on the riverbanks or swimming across to the smaller islands. This iconic river is the fourth largest in Africa after the Nile, Zaire and Niger respectively.  It is a wide, attractive river dotted with islands and sandbanks and the stretch of river preceding Victoria Falls is bordered on the Zimbabwean side by the Zambezi National Park.

Tour of the Rainforest

This adventure begins at the Victoria Falls Map Room where your guide will divulge the fascinating history, layout and geology of the Falls. Afterwards, you will make your way on foot to the David Livingstone Statue and then onwards through the flourishing rainforest to the
beautiful view points of Cataract View, Devil’s Cataract, the main Falls and then lastly to the Eastern Cataract. During your walk through the rainforest you will have the opportunity to view the numerous birds, butterflies and smaller animals that have settled in these lush surrounds as well as view huge mahogany, wild fig, sausage trees and delicate orchids. This 1.5-2 hour adventure can also be followed by an hour long excursion in the Falls Craft Village, where guests are introduced to the traditional customs of the people in the village.
