New England Fall Roadtrip Itineraries

Crisp air, golden leaves, cider donuts, and that unmistakable Gilmore Girls charm… Fall in New England isn’t just a season—it’s a whole mood.

The beauty of a New England fall is that it has something for every traveler:

For the food lovers: Bite into warm cider donuts fresh from the farm stand, sip your way through cozy cider tastings, or savor farm-to-table dining where the harvest shines.

For the culture seekers: Wander Colonial-era villages steeped in history, pop into world-class art museums, or lose yourself in the charm of cobblestone streets.

For the adventurers: Lace up your boots for hikes through flame-colored forests, paddle across glassy lakes, or climb aboard a vintage railway that winds through the mountains.

Roadtrip itinerary outline:

Day 1: Fly into New York City: Drive 2 hours to Hudson Valley, NY/ Litchfield County CT
Stay: White Barn Inn or Troutbeck

Day 2: Enjoy scenic bike rides, time at the spa, and wandering around the property followed by a gourmet dining experience for dinner. Enjoy local antique stores as well!

Day 3: Drive ~3 hours to Watch Hill, Rhode Island
Stay: Ocean House

Day 4: Bike around the property and take an evening cruise on the hotel’s yacht. Play a round of croquet or golf. Enjoy fireside oysters and a sommelier led wine tasting.

Day 5: Drive 3 hours out to Cape Cod with a stop in Newport, Rhode Island for lunch
Stay: Chatham Bars Inn

Day 6: Enjoy a farm dinner, or private beach clambake. Daily complimentary boat launches to North Beach Island are available on the hotel’s BarTender boat. Take a fishing or lobster boat trip for the day. If the weather is right opt into a kayak or paddle board excursion. Be sure to do a whale boat experience (open through October).

Day 7: Drive ~ 3 hours to Kennebunkport, Maine (consider a stop in Salem!)
Stay: White Barn Inn, Hidden Pond

Day 9: Drive to Boston Airport to depart, or use Manchester NH airport.
