Cataloochee Ranch: A Smokey Mountain Retreat
By crafted-admin

Two of our team members visited with young kids, and both came back saying the same thing: it’s relaxed, nostalgic, and special.

The property has been family-owned since 1933, when Tom and Justy Alexander founded the ranch. Nearly a century later, that sense of stewardship still defines the experience.
Why We Love It for Families (and Groups)

The property offers plenty of kid-friendly activities, but what stood out was how seamlessly those coexist with adult-focused experiences. Think craft workshops, wine tastings, cozy firepits, and wide-open space to roam. It’s one of those rare places where no one feels like they’re compromising.
There are only two three-bedroom cabins on property, making them especially coveted. One standout option is the Alexander Cabin, which sleeps up to eight and is ideal for larger families or multi-generational trips. It includes:
- Two king primary bedrooms
- Two additional bedrooms
- Bunk beds and a pull-out queen
- A bathtub (a small detail, but a big win for families)
Every cabin has a porch!

Dining Options
There is one primary restaurant on property, and the setting is hard to beat — especially the outdoor porch overlooking the mountains. Breakfast is included, and guests are free to take drinks anywhere on the grounds, including the firepits.

During Annie’s stay, the service at the restaurant was a bit slow at times. It’s worth setting expectations accordingly, particularly if you’re traveling with kids or operating on a tighter schedule.
While more dining options would be nice, the ranch makes it easy to mix things up. Both families family grabbed pizzas and salads to go and turned it into a picnic by the pond, which ended up being a highlight. The to-go food and drinks are especially ideal if you’re traveling with young children and want flexibility without sacrificing quality. They also have an on-site coffee area in the lobby with pastries and smaller items.
A Stay That Feels Like Camp… In a Good Way
Annie visited Cataloochee Ranch with her brother, husband, and two boys (ages 3 and 6), and the energy felt instantly familiar — in the best, most nostalgic sense. It felt like her years growing up at a North Carolina summer camp.
Her kids spent most of the time running the property, playing ping pong with other guests’ children, and winding down at night by the firepit, where the staff brings out s’mores kits. We rented fishing polls and her boys learned how to fish! We also took a cooler down to the pond and relaxed in the hammocks.

The horses: both Annie and Elizabeth’s kids tried the unique painting with ponies, where the kids get to create a mini masterpiece with the help of the ponies. Annie’s 6-year-old got to ride a horse for the first time!
Highlights include:
- Nightly firepits with s’mores kits
- Lawn games and ping pong tables
- A parlor in the lodge with a pool table and books
- An art studio
- A gym
- Wine tastings
- A Wednesday night BBQ dinner with live music
- Horse activities
One of the most memorable moments for Annie? Walking the grounds and “literally seeing where your food comes from,” including meeting the cows — often accompanied by a staff member calling out “hello ladies” in a thick, unforgettable drawl.
For guests wanting to explore the full scope of the land, the UTV tour is a standout. It allows you to see much of the 1,500 acres in a way that really contextualizes the ranch. Annie’s boys loved it- and the view was UNREAL.
There are spa services are available at the sister property, The Swag. A spa is reportedly in development at Cataloochee Ranch itself, which would be a welcome addition.
Seasonal Appeal (yes, even in winter)
Cataloochee Ranch is open year-round, and each season brings something different.
In winter:
- There’s a ski area next door
- Horses are less active, but still present
- Guests can still do the ropes course, archery, shooting sports, and sledding
Looking ahead, the property continues to evolve:
- A pool is planned for 2026
- Two new lodges with six rooms each are slated to open next year

Good Deeds
One thing that truly stood out to Annie was how Cataloochee Ranch showed up for its people and the community during Hurricane Helene relief efforts. The level of donations and support spoke volumes. This was an unsolicited comment from one of the guides she chatted with.
Authentic. Genuine. Respectful.
Those are the words she wrote in her notes about the staff. That’s surprisingly hard to come by these days- even at luxury properties.
The Bottom Line
Cataloochee Ranch isn’t about flash or excess. It’s about a true love for the land and sharing it with visitors.
It works well for:
- Families with young kids who want freedom and flexibility
- Groups or friends looking for an easy mountain escape with gorgeous views
- Travelers who value character, history, and a strong sense of place
If you’re considering Cataloochee Ranch and want help deciding on timing, cabin options, or how it fits into a larger North Carolina / East Coast itinerary, we’re always happy to guide you.
